Home | Media and News | 2008 Highlights 2008 HighlightsLos Angeles | October 25, 2008On October 25, 2008 at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club, 75 golfers took a swing at ending global poverty at the annual Partnership Golf Tournament in Los Angeles. Approximately $100,000 was raised at the charity event. The morning began as all the golfers assembled for an exciting putting contest that set the tone for a day of friendly competition on the golf course. Dozens of players, ranging from high school students to golf aficionados hit the green alongside the beautiful desert scenery of Santa Clarita to take part in various on-course competitions including Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, Beat the Pros (Melissa Martin and Salimah Mussani), Shoot within the Circle, and Hole-in-One. Despite various golf backgrounds, all the golfers generously came together to support Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A.’s (AKF USA) efforts to help people and communities in Africa and Asia to help themselves through projects in health, education, rural development, civil society and the environment. The evening culminated with an awards banquet dinner and a silent and live auction. As the auctioneer was facilitating fundraising for AKF USA's initiatives, he himself donated funds to the equivalent of providing health supplies to fourteen health care workers in India. Nazim Karim, Ismaili Council USA National Member for Community Development, in his keynote address highlighted human interest success stories such as women in Pakistan who have lifted themselves out of poverty through access to microfinance loans. An official proclamation from the office of Congressman Brad Sherman praising the efforts of PartnershipsInAction Golf and its contributions to the global community was presented to representatives of the AKF USA Western Region Volunteer team along with a US flag that flew above the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. The participants then enjoyed a live band and dancing under the Santa Clarita stars. View press release of the event Birmingham | October 21, 2008On October 21, 2008 at the Riverchase Country Club, 72 golfers took a swing at ending global poverty at the annual PartnershipsInAction Golf Tournament. Approximately $64,000 was raised at the charity event. The Riverchase Country Club offered first-class amenities to the golfers and guests. The tournament featured varied contests that excited and engaged golfers throughout the day – ranging from contests such as Closest to the Pin, Putting Contest, Straight Drive and Hole-in-One. The tournament was followed by a banquet lunch and awards ceremony. Georgia State Representative Melvin Everson; Dr. Joy Brown, Principal of Bumpus Middle School; and Dr. Don Hulin, Principal of Hoover High School each addressed the crowd in speeches that highlighted the work of Aga Khan Foundation. The tournament featured varied contests that excited and engaged golfers throughout the day – including a Helicopter Golf Ball Drop and a Hole-In-One contest. The tournament was followed by an awards banquet as well as a silent and live auction. View press release of the event Seattle | August 11, 2008The Seattle PartnershipsInAction Golf Tournament was a true grand affair, held on a beautiful and rare sunny day on August 11, 2008. The tournament took place at the Golf Club at Newcastle, offering stunning views and first-class amenities to the golfers and guests of the tournament. The event brought together 144 golfers who took a swing at ending global poverty and were joined by various corporate and civic leaders, entrepreneurs, families and colleagues, collectively raising approximately $240,000! The tournament featured varied activities and contests at each hole which excited and engaged golfers throughout the day--raging from entertaining on-course contests such as Beat the Pro, Bocchi Ball and Cheating for Charity to pampering massages, BBQ grills, ice cream and much more - see complete Tournament Program for details. The tournament was followed by a magnificent Awards Banquet and Live Auction hosted by emcee, John Curly of King 5 TV and Evening Magazine. One of the highlights of the event was the entertainment from Drum Café that was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants and energized and hyped up the golfers and audience before the commencement of the Award Banquet. Akhtar Badshah, Senior Director of the Community Affairs at Microsoft Corp. delivered a heartfelt keynote speech highlighting the work of Aga Khan Foundation, highlighting the partnership between Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential program and the Aga Khan Development Network. Other distinguished guests included the Hon. Brad Owen, Lieutenant Governor of Washington who delighted the audience with a preview of his personal saxophone performance, which he also generously donated as a Live Auction donation item. And there was yet another rare moment - a Hole in One winner of brand-new 2008 Saturn Astra, awarded to Mr. Nick Perrault for his Hole-in-One on Hole #10. View press release of the event Minneapolis | August 11, 2008The Minneapolis Golf Tournament was a resounding success with an increased number of sponsors, players, and funds raised from 2007. On August 11, 2008, at The Majestic Golf Course in Minneapolis, 45 golfers took a swing at ending global poverty at the annual Partnership Golf Tournament. Approximately $12,000 was raised at the charity event. The beautiful weather brought together participants from the local area, and Chicago. The day culminated with a presentation from Chairman Aziz Ajani, Chairman for MidWest Region AKF USA Volunteer Team, who highlighted the work of Aga Khan Foundation. The Minnesota State Senator Satveer Chaudhary, the first Asian Indian senator, was also present at the dinner and spoke proudly of the innovative work of the Foundation. View press release of the event Chicago | June 8, 2008On June 8,2008, at the Whisper Creek Golf Club 94 golfers took a swing at ending global poverty at the annual Partnership Golf Tournament. Approximately $60,000 were raised at the charity event. Following the tournament, an awards ceremony and dinner were held featuring keynote speaker, Tom Ryan of CD One Price Cleaners, who emphasized AKF’s support of the entrepreneurial spirit through microfinance loans. View press release of the event Houston | May 19, 2008On May 19, 2008, at Sweetwater Country Club 170 golfers took a swing at ending global poverty at the annual Partnership Golf Tournament. Approximately $130,000 was raised at the charity event. In addition, representatives from Pepsi Co. who participated in the tournament donated $65,000 to the Foundation’s flagship program, Partnership Walk. The event brought together corporate and civic leaders, entrepreneurs and colleagues, who enjoyed a day of golf including John F. Healy, District Attorney for Fort Bend County, while demonstrating their support to end global poverty. Following the tournament, an awards ceremony and dinner were held featuring keynote speaker Chester Pitts of the Houston Texans who emphasized the need to end global poverty. Naushad Kermally, Chairman for Southwest Region AKF USA Volunteer Team, highlighted the work of Aga Khan Foundation and explained how its programs help people in the developing world meet their daily challenges and make a tremendous impact in reducing conditions of poverty, improving access to quality education and health care, and creating opportunities for improving income. Ron Trevino, morning anchor for Channel 11 KHOU, emceed the event. A major highlight was the helicopter ball drop that created a lot of excitement and raised over $3,000. View press release of the event Atlanta | May 13, 2008On May 13, 2008 at the Country Club of the South, 86 golfers took a swing at ending global poverty at the annual Partnership Golf Tournament. Approximately $65,000 were raised at the charity event. To kick off the tournament Mayor of Johns Creek, Mike Bodker greeted the golfers at the start of the event and thanked all participants and sponsors for coming to a tournament that supports an important cause and for showing their passion and commitment in helping humanity. The event brought together corporate and civic leaders, entrepreneurs, families and colleagues, who enjoyed a day of golf while demonstrating their support to end global poverty. Following the tournament, an awards ceremony and luncheon were held featuring keynote speaker Melvin Everson, Georgia State Representative who conveyed a heartfelt message to golfers. As a Baptist pastor he emphasized that it is everyone’s responsibility to reach out and learn about people of different cultures and backgrounds. He noted that the Foundation demonstrates how working together can make a tremendous impact on saving and improving lives of the poor around the world. Other distinguished guests included Mike Beaudreau, Gwinnett County Commissioner; John Davidson, Chief of Lilburn Police; Jerry Dean Weber, Reverend and President of Brookwood Cluster Foundation; and Jerry Oberholtzer, Mayor of Snellville. Approximately $120,000 was raised at the charity event. The event brought together corporate and civic leaders, entrepreneurs, families and colleagues, who enjoyed a day of golf while demonstrating their support to end global poverty. Following the tournament, an awards ceremony and dinner were held featuring a keynote speaker, Dr. Mona Khanna, who highlighted the work of Aga Khan Foundation and explained how the foundation is focused on long-term solutions and building the capacity of communities to be self-reliant . Distinguished guests included Mayor of the Colony, John Dillard, and WFAA meteorologist, Ms. Meghan Danahey. Well-known celebrities also participated in the event including Dallas Cowboys and professional golfers. A major highlight of the event was the helicopter ball drop that created a lot of excitement and helped raise over $3,000.
